Vztah mezi studentem a profesorem v USA
Jako jeden z rozdílů mezi studiem v ČR a USA studenti často uvádějí osobnější či rovnocennější vztah s profesory. Zatímco na vysokých školách v ČR je vztah studentů a profesorů podmíněn spíše autoritou profesora, v USA se důraz klade spíše na otevřenost a vstřícnost vůči studentům, které jsou rovněž jedním z kritérií hodnocení profesorů.
V USA je považováno za samozřejmé, že profesoři si na své studenty udělají čas i mimo konzultační hodiny, pokud je k tomu pádný důvod, nebo že student dostane odpověď na email do dne či dvou. Profesoři často poskytnou studentům své telefonní číslo, kdyby snad měli nějaké otázky. Nutno podotknout, že to dělají z dobré vůle, smlouva s univerzitou je k tomu nezavazuje.
Nedávno jsem otevřela sylabus od profesora Sanforda na Univerzitě Grand Valley v Michiganu a našla jsem v něm následující seznam očekávání v nichž profesor téměř právní formou “quid pro quo” dává svým studentům na srozuměnou jaká jsou pravidla jeho výuky. A protože mi to zase připomnělo onen propastný rozdíl mezi univerzitním prostředím v USA a doma, rozhodla jsem se o tyto řádky s Vámi podělit.
Profesor Sanford je vystudovaný právník a daňový poradce a v úvodu svých skript pro předmět Obchodní právo uvádí toto:
What I expect of myself as your professor - Please bring it to my attention if you feel that I am not meeting these expectations. (I would appreciate it.)
1. I expect to present the classroom experience in a professional manner. I will be on time and prepared. I expect the lecture to be relevant and, to the extent possible, enjoyable.
2. I expect to answer classroom questions in a professional manner without making the student regret they asked a question. If I ever make you feel “bad” for asking a question, please bring this to my attention. I want students to ask questions.
3. I expect to give students who come to office “positive” attention. I want students to be glad they came to my office, and not have regrets.
4. I expect to answer student e-mails, and phone calls in a timely, professional manner. I also try very hard to treat all the students equal thus, no “special rules” for you if you do not follow course guidelines.
5. Overall, I want to give students the respect they deserve. Students pay a lot of money to attend college and deserve to be treated with respect. Without my students, I would not have a job.
6. While I am not perfect, I will strive to meet these expectations. If you ever feel I have failed, please bring it to my attention so I can improve. Thank you.
What I expect of you as a student in my class, especially of you want to get a “B” grade or better
1. I expect that you will attend every class and be at class on time.
2. I expect that you will be in class on exam day and turn in your class assignment on time.
3. I expect that you will read the book regarding the material we cover in class. I expect that you will be prepared when you come to class.
4. I expect that you read and understand the syllabus.
5. I expect that you will be professional and work hard.
6. I expect that you will think independently and critically about the ideas that I present in class.
7. I expect that you will consider going to graduate school and law school, in particular, if you like this class.
8. I expect that if you are having any “problems” you will bring it to my attention.
9. I expect that you will ask questions in class (items not understood).
10. I expect that you will attend the class after the exam if you want to see the exam.
